Residents who were concerned over major housing developments formed Barton-under-Needwood Civic Society in 1974. Their aim is to try and preserve the character of the village. They review planning applications and make their objections known to the East Staffs Planning Committee to try and limit the impact of the development especially if it is in the conservation area. The Douglas Ball Award is made annually in memory of the founder of the Society. This is given to the person or building that has enriched the village community and culture most in the year. The Civic Society meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:45 pm in the Village Hall, apart from July & August when there is no meeting and December when the meeting is on the second Saturday for the Douglas Ball Award presentations. Members are given a resume of Parish Council news and Village news before a talk from a guest speaker, every other meeting an update of Neighbourhood Watch information is given. Guest speaker subjects vary from animals to buildings, life styles to history. A visit to a historic town is arranged for the second Saturday in July. Additionally trips to the theatre or a visit by a theatrical company to the Village Hall are arranged. |
