The
summer weather has been excellent, and
I am delighted to say that the club is also doing
well.
¨
The new Multi Use Games Area, looks fantastic and is being well
used. It is not without
its problems I have to say, (see separate article)
¨
The cricket A team is at the top of the first division
¨
The Tennis A team looks set for promotion to the first
division, for the first time in 20 years or so!
¨
We have huge junior membership, especially in Football, Cricket
and Tennis
¨
The “Cricket for non-cricketers” competition has been a
great success; congratulations
to the winners, the Football Club.
¨
Bar income in the summer has been consistently high, which
means we will be going in to the traditionally quieter autumn and
winter with some cash in hand
¨
The leaflet we put through every door in the village has had a
very positive effect, with many more people becoming Associate
members, and we have also received some very welcome donations.
So
we are moving forward! But
there remains plenty to
do. We are still trying
to recover from the loss of the Hockey club, who cannot play on our
pitches because their league insists on Astroturf.
They have left a big hole in winter activity and therefore in
bar revenue (I hadn’t realised hockey players were such big
drinkers!). Football and
Rugby are trying to make up for it, but it takes time. I’d just like
to remind you that any member may book the Lounge or the Main Bar for
a private party, and if you would like to organise something like a
quiz or a live band event, especially on a Friday or Saturday, we’d
be pleased to hear from you.

Club Chairman
After
two years of talking, form filling and document preparation, the
Multi-Use Games Areas are now a reality.
And what a great facility they provide. The three old tennis
courts have been transformed into two separately fenced areas; one is
the right size for five-a-side football and netball (or tennis) and
the larger area is the size of two tennis courts and is also rebound
fenced for football and suitable for netball or training by any of our
clubs. The new floodlighting is ‘state of the art’ and will
deliver a bright 300 lux. The
heavy duty steel mesh fencing is now preferred to boards because it
returns the ball better, is safer (no splinters or finger traps) and
provides good visibility into and out of the sports area. So our new facility is ready for plenty of
action this winter, and with the separated areas, three clubs could
organise activities to take place at the same time.
It is important for Holland Sports that the areas are well
used, providing income at the bar and making opportunities to build
more facilities. With
good support the MUGA will become just the first of many improvements.
Please get your sport to organise events and make sure all areas are
well used this winter.
Vic Trigwell
The Club’s
Executive have agreed on a Five Year Game Plan to set out how we want
Holland Sports Club to develop. We
cannot afford to stand still and the 50 members who came to the open
meeting in January set the pace for the steady development of the
Club. The arrival of the new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) is a great
start but the newly set up Club Development Group want to help the
Club Members to do even greater things over the next few years.
The Game Plan sets objectives for one and five years; copies
will be available in the Clubhouse shortly. The
Development Group want to talk to all clubs to see how we can all work
together to improve facilities and develop the Club.
All growth depends on income over the bar, so events and any
other ways of increasing numbers in the clubhouse will help (not too
painful a request!). Why
not encourage your friends to join us, as a playing member or maybe as
an associate member? Major projects currently being dreamed about for
the next two years are improvements to the changing rooms, including a
small gym facility, and some children’s play equipment. So enjoy the
new MUGA, but don’t forget that working together we can achieve a
lot more new projects. Make
sure your sport’s representative comes to the Club’s Executive
meetings and lets us know what you would like to see happening.

Next
season, 2003/04, Barton Rovers will be fielding seven teams in the
Burton Junior Football League, ranging from Under 9‘s to 14’s
everyone will be trying hard to improve on last season’s performance
of four top three places and two runners-up, from six teams. The club
continues to grow as we now have around 70 registered players, who are
all Junior Members of Holland Sports Club, as well as dozens who come
to the mini-soccer sessions with Rob Walker on Thursday evenings .
Each age group has at least one FA qualified coach and our aim is to
continue training anyone who coaches or manages a team as a commitment
to helping the children improve their skills and their enjoyment of
the game. Through both the summer and winter, training takes place at
the Holland Sports Club and if you would like to know more about the
club or the teams, whether as a player, helper or futures coach,
please get in touch with any of the following:
Under
9s Dave Mullis 713197; Under 10s Pat Brown 712878; Under 11s Bill
Mason 713412; Under 12s Brian Mole 716506; Under 14s Grahame Walker

A
good report from the Cricket. At
senior level, the 1st X1 have won Division 1 of the Burton
& District League by winning every match that they have played.
The 2nd and 3rd X1s’ are also doing well, with many of
our youngsters showing the
ability to switch into senior cricket. This augurs well for the
success of the club. Next
year we hope to start an under 11’s team, we already have a number
in this age group being coached.
We have had a huge success with the youth cricket this season,
the under 13’s X1 finished runners up in the league and won the KO
trophy. Also both the
under 15’s and under 17’s have done very well considering this was
the first year for many years we have had three youth sides.
Many thanks to all the coaches and every one concerned
Derek
Cropper Chairman.
No
report has been
received, but congratulations are due to the Ladies Under 18
Team for winning the National Plate Competition, which must
be an all time high for any team within
the Club.
As
we are drawing close to the end of our 2003 season it is interesting
for us to see where we are now, as we are just one week away from the
National |Championships. Having lost one or two experienced club
members at the end of a very successful 2003 season, and having taken
on a handful of novice tug of war pullers, we were expecting to have a
slightly slower season than we have been used to of late.
This was the case for the first few weeks of this season, but
the old team spirit and character was soon shining through, and with
some hard work and dedication to training, the team has pulled itself
back into medal contention at the forthcoming Nationals, which will be
held at the Royal Showground at Stoneleigh. The club have enjoyed
several good wins this season, generally at the 620 kilos 4+4 event (4
men and 4 women), the 680 kilos and Catchweight (Heavyweight), and
have pushed through to be leading
the National League at Catchweight and holding runners up spots
in the 4+4 and the 680 kilos, after 4 of the 7 venues that constitute
the league have been completed. The Tug of
War Federation of Great Britain’s National Championships are
held over the August bank holiday weekend and will see our junior team
(under 17s) compete on the Saturday, with the senior teams taking part
on the Sunday and our ladies team competing in the Ladies
Championships on the Monday. The National League Finals will be hosted
by the Barton Club at their headquarters, the Holland Sports Club, on
14th September, and the atmosphere at the event will no
doubt be electric as usual, as the teams jockey for final positions in
the National League. We are looking for some new pullers as ever, so,
if you fancy a go just come on down and see us; we cater for juniors
and seniors, men and women. No previous experience is needed, we will
train you and help you to learn and improve the required skills.
