In line with the NHS's Framework for Older People and other Government initiatives designed to prevent "bed blocking" in acute hospitals and inappropriate admission of older people to long term residential care. Shaw healthcare, supported by South Staffordshire Primary Care Trust is delighted to announce the opening of its 'Extra Care' scheme as part of the new Barton-under-Needwood Community Health and Care Centre.

This scheme bridges the gap between conventional private retirement housing and institutional care and provides a supported home environment where older people can live independently for longer and, if in hospital, return home sooner.

Shaw Extra Care offers Support and Care services to tenants in there own apartments each with their own dedicated entrance situated above the new care centre and GP surgery in Short Lane, Barton-under-Needwood. Support services are of course available 24 hours a day with programmed and ad hoc personal care assistance on hand 7 days a week from the Shaw Community Services Team, catering for the needs of those people who may have otherwise entered a registered care home.

Healthier lifestyles and increased affluence today means we are all living longer. However declining mobility can mean this type of housing becomes obvious when seeking to maintain independent living arrangements.

Shaw's personalised arrangements make available packages of care to residents living in these high quality apartments, the accommodation on site providing for nearly 30 older people in settings which promote independence yet with the support of pop in checks, which can be arranged 'via Shaw's own care agency' day or night as required.

This development of one or two bedroom apartment's benefits from a range of flexible onsite service's delivered to each individuals care needs. In addition the added security should anyone require more intensive treatment, following a fall or period of hospitalisation can be provided by the on site intermediate care unit, providing short term medical rehabilitation services.

All apartments have a call system to summon on site care assistance in an emergency.

In addition there is a larger than normal amount of communal space, balanced to add interest and meaning, including a cosy lounge and restaurant with terrace, specialised assisted bathrooms, laundry room and social activity, hobby and craft areas. There is an on site hairdressing and therapy suite, use of computer and library facilities and even overnight accommodation for guests.

Care Options

Residents can be assured their own personal care needs and wishes will be addressed; they will find optional complimentary therapies available at the Barton under Needwood 'Shaw Extra Care' scheme that are refreshing and offer a real enhancement to their quality of life. Medical, social and care needs are all catered for by direct contact with and subsequent visits from our partners within the NHS Primary Care Trust and Local Authority who can organise an on site 'care needs assessment' and if necessary refer residents on to the on site physiotherapy, chiropody and district nurse.
