NOW, ALL OVER BRITAIN WE... REMEMBER THE FUTURE
There is no better time than now, at the end of a
Millennium to honour the past while remembering the future.
And now, thanks to a Grant from The Millennium
Commission, and donations from many, many other sources to match it the opportunity has presented itself in a most
memorable way - The National Memorial Arboretum.
Its inspiration came from a concern of the late
Group Captain Lord Cheshire VC CM DSO DFC who felt that something
positive should be done if we were to remember forever our debt to
those who gave so much to defend our freedom. The Arboretum will
fulfil that desire and, in keeping with Lord Cheshire’s vision, a
small percentage of each donation goes towards helping those who are
still suffering as a result of conflict.
The chosen site, gifted by Redland Aggregates, lies
within The National Forest, a massive new undertaking to plant
millions of trees amongst both rolling countryside and industrial
waste land and thus transform 200 square miles of Britain.
With both national and international support The
National Memorial Arboretum will be a unique gift from all nations to
the new century and beyond.
And it can be your gift also. If you would like to
dedicate a tree to someone special you can do so by making
a donation to The National Memorial Arboretum.
This is Our Vision of The
National Memorial Arboretum
This
is our vision of The National Memorial, Arboretum to be created
near Lichfield at the heart of the country and within The National
Forest.
Its central features will include:
 | A
Millennium Avenue, grown from 2,000 year old stock.
|
 | The
National Police Memorial Avenue, ‘The Beat’, planted
with a collection of Chestnuts.
|
 | A
Rose garden, planted as a tribute to Britain’s War Widows.
|
 | A
Poppy Field, sponsored by The Royal British Legion.
|
 | An
Avenue of the United Nations, where representatives of every
member state will plant a tree.
|
 | A
Golden Grove, planted for couples celebrating their Golden
Wedding.
|
And throughout there will be memorial areas and
trees planted in tribute to the men and women of the twentieth
century.
The National Memorial Arboretum gives us a chance
to look forward as well as back, to commemorate the past by creating a
permanent and living gift for the future.
