Barton Turns Marina Opening

The 15th August 2000 saw an historic occasion occur in Barton-under-Needwood, namely the opening of Barton Marina to canal boats. The idea for a marina had been proposed  by the Parish Council in 1972, when drawing up the Village Plan of possible future developments. The current development was proposed in 1989 as part of the District Plan, by Mr. Barry Morgan. Outline Planning approval was given in 1992, which was followed by detailed plans in 1993. Invited guest toasted the first boat to enter the Barton Marina at Noon. This was a joyous occasion for Mr. Morgan, which was made more joyous by the news that the East Staffordshire Borough  Council had passed his plans the previous day for the development of the buildings around the marina. These should make the marina into a popular boating and tourist venue.
