Barton Student Captains University Basketball Team to
National Finals
Twenty one year old James Gardner from Holly Road, Barton
under Needwood, is currently midway through the third year of his 4 year Degree
course, training to be a Physical Education Teacher, at Bedford's 'De Montfort
University'. A keen basketball player James was over the moon to gain selection
for the University's first team in his very first year at the University. James
has since been an important part of Bedford's very successful squad, and was
delighted to be elected to the position of 'Team Captain' at the commencement of
this, his third year.
The team have performed wonderfully well over the recent
months, winning the Varsity match for a third straight year, they have also just
clinched the National (British University) League Division Three Title and
battled their way to the National Tournament Finals, beating Bolton in the Semi
Finals on the way. The De Montfort squad were very unlucky to lose an exciting
final by just 7 points, having twice led their opponents, Greenwich, during the
match
Over the Easter weekend the team head out to Spain on tour
where they will play at least ten games, over the two day competition. James and
his team are now in the running for honours at the Athletic Union Awards at
Bedford University following their outstanding performance, as 'Team of the
Year' and James is also tipped for 'Sports Team Captain' of the year.

Recruitment drive by Barton Bowls Club
Barton Bowls & Social Club is a family club, where children are
welcome, with a large Bar and Lounge serving some of the cheapest
drinks in the village. The two Crown Greens, which are amongst the
best in the area, stage County matches and numerous competitions.
Bowlers of both sexes enjoy the facilities with ages ranging from 9 to
90. There are several teams playing in local leagues on various days
or evenings. The Bowls Club is looking to increase its pool of
bowlers, especially for Saturday matches. The Bowls Club is very
interested in recruiting young new bowlers to ensure that the art of
crown green bowling continues there. Existing bowlers are happy to
coach novice bowlers. Have you bowled before and want to return to
this friendly and excellent sport? Never bowled before but you would
like to have a go?
Interested? Contact Bowls Secretary Jeff Pattison on 01283 713119,
or Bowls Chairman Bob Timmis on 01283 713501.
